I got to talk about my job with a bunch of eighth-graders during a career fair at Richland Community College this morning. I’ve done it for the past few years and it’s always a good time… I show some photos and let the kids check out the cameras, which usually holds their attention.
One of the kids snapped this photo of me while I was talking. I must have been moving really fast.
One kid seemed pretty bummed that I didn’t get to take pictures of Jack Black. I don’t think that’s the highest person on my “celebrities-I-want-to-shoot” list. The best question of the day came from a girl that asked:
“Do you get to have a life if you have to work at night all the time?”
I wanted to come up with some surly response along the lines of “A life? The news doesn’t stop for me to have a life, kid.” but I couldn’t do it.

Most of the time I think my job is pretty cool, but I couldn’t get this report from the Wall Street Journal out of the back of my head while I was talking to the kids. Photojournalist is listed as 189 out of 200 jobs for 2010. Unfortunately there weren’t any garbage collectors, lumberjacks or roustabouts speaking at career fair today or I’d totally rub it in their face.
