I meant to blog this game sooner, but it seems like every time I tell myself it’s time to post something my 3-month-old son wakes up and I end up falling asleep in the armchair while rocking him to sleep.
While shooting the last regular-season high school football game between Monticello and Decatur St. Teresa two weeks ago I watched as Monticello’s Vaughn Pierce (5) ran onto the field with teammates carrying a big piece of wood. I didn’t see anything special about the wood. No markings… no carvings… just a beat-up hunk of lumber. I asked one of the players about it and he told me they were just “bringing the wood” in a tone like I was an idiot for not knowing.
I came home and told my wife about it. She hadn’t heard it before either… so, naturally, she googled it.

I got to shoot a good game and learn something too… those are the best assignments ever.
The kids played hard through nasty weather and Monticello won 28-15, an outcome that I think surprised a lot of people… apparently since St. Teresa has blown this team out of the water for the past seven years.
that last one brings my photo wood. nice.
