Eisenhower High School hadn’t won a game in a long time. In fact, most of the kids on the team didn’t know what it felt like to win as a Panther… until Friday night. After losing 25 straight games they beat the Urbana Tigers 20-8.
When my boss told me I was shooting this game because Eisenhower might actually have a chance to win I was skeptical about what I’d get. Not just because both teams were 0-6 going into the game, but I am starting to think that my presence is a curse to most of our teams. Case in point, I’ve covered all of the University of Illinois home football games so far this season…
Anyone that hears me talk about my job knows how much I love to cover high school sports. Sure, I may complain about the cold… or the mud… or the fact that there weren’t any rosters at the gate. But at the end of the night when I saw Josh Bright (55) get a huge hug from his dad, John, I remembered that this cold, muddy game on the road might be the biggest night of some of these kids (and parents’) lives… and I get to show our readers as much of that as I can.
